Borderlands 4 Nightmare Rifts locations and best farming method

Descending into the nightmare!

The Nightmare Rift is a brand new activity in Borderlands 4 added with The Story Pack 1: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned DLC.

It is a DLC-exclusive activity featuring new bosses and the Legendaries that players must farm to get the good rolls to min-max their builds.

That said, unlike the usual world bosses that we have in the base game, The Nightmare Rifts doesn’t have a bubble within which you fight the bosses.

Instead, their location has a small artifact with a red beam of light going upwards, which, when you approach, turns into a bloody thorn-like thing that you can interact with to teleport to another dimension to fight the boss.

All these things, along with the fact that most players don’t even know their possible spawn locations or how to get them to spawn consistently, make it hard to farm the new gear and weapons.

And, to solve that, I have been working on a consistent spawn and routing ever since the DLC came out, and I finally have it.

Best farming route for Nightmare Rifts in Borderlands 4 Mad Ellie DLC

To start the farm, you must teleport to the Edge of the World waypoint in the Crooked Teeth sub-region.

The above map screenshot shows the route we will be following, with the numbers denoting the Nightmare Rift spawns locations.

Right after you spawn at the Edge of the World waypoint, look to your right where the arrow is pointing. If the Nightmare Rift has spawned, interact with it or follow the path below.

Here’s how it appears:

Now back to the route.

From the first spawn, stick to the water body and head straight, as shown in the screenshot above.

Keep following the mard path.

After you take the left turn at the corner, head straight and then take a right to reach the second spawn.

The arrow in the above screenshot points at the Nightmare Rift spawn location.

Here is how it looks when one spawns:

Now, from the second spawn, head towards the cave next to the Sugar Factory.

Climb up.

And there you will find the third spawn.

Now, here comes the farming part. If you followed the route as shared in the guide, you should have gotten at least one Nightmare Rift spawn.

If not, you must head back to the Edge of the World waypoint, exit to the Main Menu and then continue. Once you spawn back, you must follow the same route.

Here’s a raw video of me showing how consistent this route is:

Here’s a summary of the farming route:

  1. Spawn at Edge of the World waypoint
  2. Follow the Nightmare Rift farming route as shown above
  3. At the end of the route or after clearing a Nightmare Rift, head back to the Edge of the World waypoint
  4. Exit to Main Menu, load back in, follow the same route
  5. Repeat from step 1

I am working to complete the route and make it even more efficient. For now, I would greatly appreciate it if you all could share this route with your friends on social media and so on to increase visibility.

Note

While following the above route, when you exit to the Main Menu and Continue, there’s a chance that when you spawn back, you may get the error pop-up on the right side saying “Save Failed.”

Whenever that happens, you must restart your game, Steam, your PC, or whatever system you are playing on.

If that Saving Failed persists, the Rifts will not spawn at all. This is still in the research phase. If I find more on this, I will update this note.
