If you want to mine Ceramics, you must unlock and complete the Restore Smoke Hill Mine side quest in Death Stranding 2. This is what my guide is about.
Restore Smoke Hill Mine is a very easy quest that many players skip, as it is a Sub Order and not a main one.
However, unlocking the Smoke Hill Mine is recommended as it is one of the best sources to get Ceramics.
For players who don’t know, the Smoke Hill Mine is one of the two Ceramic Mines, the other one being Mine North of Tar Lake, that you can use to mine Ceramics using Chiral Crystals.
In my Ceramic location and best farming method guide, I have already stressed how important it is to have Ceramics, as you can use them to pave roads that make going from one location to another a lot easier.
On the other hand, it also allows you to craft key equipment like the Battle Skeleton.
So keep reading as I walk you through the entire quest.
How to unlock the Restore Smoke Hill Mine side quest in Death Stranding 2

You can unlock the Sub Order “Restore Smoke Hill Mine” by completing the main quest, aka Main Order 10, “Liberate the Western Environmental Observatory.”
Once you complete the said main order, interact with the Terminal at the Western Environmental Observatory, and you will find the Restore Smoke Hill Mine quest.
Restore the Smoke Hill Mine side quest walkthrough

Select and confirm the Restore Smoke Hill Mine quest and skip through the dialogues and such options.
Make sure to collect the 480 Special Alloys.
You can also place it in your vehicle.

Once you have it, you can create a route to the Smoke Hill Mine or directly head there.

There are no enemies or BTs en route. So don’t worry!

Once you arrive at the Smoke Hill Mine, your main objective is to activate the Mining Terminal by despositing the Special Alloy.

Head towards the Terminal.
Additionally, near the black tar, you will find a ton of Chiral Crystals, I recommend collecting them.

Interact with the Mining Terminal.

Select, “Restore Mining Facility” option.

Deposit the collected Special Alloy.
Once done, head back to the Western Environmental Observatory and submit the order.

That’s it.
