If you are facing lag and stutter issues while playing Avowed even though you have decent hardware, don’t worry! I’ve got you covered with this The Based Otaku guide.

The action RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, Avowed, is, or should I say was, one of the most hyped-up games of 2025, until the game’s art director went on a social standoff with the fans.

While many players were ok to give the game a try, some were worried about the performance as Avowed is an Unreal Engine 5 game.

With the rest waiting to give it the Dragon Age Veilguard treatment.

Moreover, even the devs warned players to expect some performance issues.

Well! I think that “SOME” can be replaced with “MAJOR” as the game is a technical mess.

But, as always, there are certain steps that you can take from your end to improve the performance slightly.

That said, in this guide, I have shared everything I did to make Avowed run slightly better.

Avowed lag and stutter issue fixes

Before I share the steps that you can use to make the game run slightly better than before, I will say that, it is not your hardware, it is just that Avowed is poorly optimized.

Sorry!

But there is no magic trick that can let you get a massive FPS boost.

Until and unless we get a patch with game optimization and other fixes.

Or a community mod!

With that being out of the way, here are some things that you can try out!

Updating your GPU

As you may already know, whenever we get a big game release, we often get a new driver update from AMD, Intel, and Nvidia.

Especially the latter, ensuring there are no compatibility issues while also making sure, your game runs fine on their GPUs.

So, it is always good to keep your graphics driver updated.

When I started playing Avowed, I had an old driver installed.

I checked the Nvidia app and saw there’s a new driver update ver. 572.42, game ready for Avowed, Civilization VII, and other new releases.

I installed the latest update and while I didn’t get any significant boost in FPS, I saw small increases and slight stable frames.

Now, that could just be me overthinking that the new driver really helped, but still, it is always good to have the latest driver installed.

Except in some cases where old drivers / fresh install are far better than the latest ones.

Closing unnecessary applications or using game boosters

If you have a memory-heavy application running in the background, closing it results in a slight increase in FPS.

For example: Google Chrome.

I usually manually close stuff but for players who don’t want that much hassle, a game booster like the Razer Cortex will just do a fine job.

Installing the game on an SSD

The developers recommend installing Avowed on an SSD and there’s a very good reason for that as it keeps the loading time in check and also helps in reducing graphical glitches and issues.

Updating the game

When a game like Avowed launches, there’s a high chance that the devs will address the performance and other issues.

Most of the time, these issues are fixed by day one and other patches.

So it is always good to keep the game updated even though it is not a multiplayer title as the devs often roll out new updates to fix and improve certain aspects of the game.

Using appropriate graphics settings

This is by far the most important tip that I can give you for fixing lag and stutter in Avowed.

Please adjust your graphics setting as per your hardware.

It is a big topic and I already have a detailed guide on Avowed best graphics settings for high FPS without compromising visual quality.

I recommend checking it out, especially for Nvidia users as I have shared Nvidia filter settings that makes the game more visually appealing.

That concludes my guide on Avowed lag and stutter fixes. If the article helped, please consider buying me a Coffee to help me create more content. You can also share the guide with your friends or leave a comment.
