The Ice Fishing is a hidden side mission found in the Whispering Glacier region in Borderlands 4, added with the Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned DLC.
To trigger the quest, you must fish using dynamite at certain spots for a chance to get Echo Logs that tell the story of a man named Gumpy.
You need four such Echo Logs to get the quest to appear. And since there’s no quest market or hints, leading you to this, without proper knowledge, most players will miss out on this quest.
You must finish it to unlock the “Looking for Work at the Top of the World” trophy/achievement that requires you to complete all the side quests in the Whispering Glacier region.
Well! This is where my Ice Fishing hidden side mission walkthrough comes in handy.
Ice Fishing side mission walkthrough
To trigger the quest, you need four Echo Logs of an NPC named Gumpy. Only then will the quest appear in The Speakeasy hub area.
Here’s an overview of the quest objective:
- Fish using dynamite at the different fishing spots for a chance to get Gumpy’s Echo Log
- Start the quest by talking to Marina at The Speakeasy
- Find Gumpy’s hut
- Listen to Log
- Collect dynamite
- Destroy the Ice Cap
- Kill Ol Thrash
- Collect Gumpy’s Hat
Here’s a look at the different fishing spots and the full quest walkthrough:
Fishing Spot 1
You can find Fishing Spots all around the Crooked Teeth sub-region. You can find one at the above marked location.
Head there, and you will find a bucket with dynamite. Interact with it to take the dynamite.
Now, look to the right at the highlighted location; you will find bubbles coming out of the water.
Throw the dynamite at it for a chance to get the Echo Log.
Note
If the bubble spot is not there for the above location or any of the fishing spots shared below, you must exit to the Main Menu and then load back in. Doing so spawns the bubbles. I have tested it.
Collect the Echo Log. If you didn’t get one, move to the next location.
Fishing Spot 2
You can find the second fishing spot at the above marked location.
Here, there, and you will find the bucket with the dynamite.
From its location, look to the left, and you will find the bubble spot.
Throw the dynamite, collect the Echo Log or move to the next location.
Fishing Spot 3
The third fishing spot is at the above marked location.
Head there and interact with the bucket with dynamite.
The bubble spot is directly to the bucket’s location, as you can see in the screenshot above.
Collect the Echo Log. If you didn’t get one, move to the next location.
Fishing Spot 4
The fourth fishing spot is at the above marked location.
Head there and collect the dynamite from the bucket.
You will find the bubble spot straight to the bucket’s location.
In my case, the bubble spot didn’t spawn at first. So, I had to quit to the Main Menu and keep making it spawn.
Even after that, I didn’t get the Echo Log from it. So don’t worry if you didn’t get one either. The Echo Log drops are based on RNG and can spawn at any of these fishing spots.
Fishing Spot 5
The fifth fishing spot is near the Edge of the World waypoint, at the above marked location.
Head there and collect the dynamite.
The bubble spot is to the left of the bucket’s location, as you can see in the screenshot above.
Collect the Echo Log. By this time, you must have all four Echo Logs. If not, here’s another fishing spot.
Fishing Spot 6
The sixth fishing spot is at the above-marked location.
Head there, collect the dynamite, and throw it at the bubble spot.

Starting the quest
Assuming you have all four Echo Logs, open your map and check The Speakeasy. A new quest called Ice Fishing should have appeared.
Teleport there. Talk to Marina and accept the quest.
Find Gumpy’s Hut
After that, exit through the door near the entrance, as it is close to the objective.
Make your way towards Gumpy’s hut.
Listen to Log
Interact with the Echo Log and let it finish.
Take dynamite
After that, collect the dynamite from the bucket.
Destroy the Ice Cap
Head towards the marked location and throw it on the frozen water body.
Kill Ol Thrash
A named Thresher called Ol Thrash will spawn. Defeat him.
Pick up Gumpy’s Hat
Collect Gumpy’s Hat.
After that, your Vault Hunter will talk to Marina and say that Gumpy defeated the Ol Thrash (a lie) and he died as a hero.
That will mark the end of the quest.
