If you are finding it hard to survive the cold temperature causing Hypothermia or the blazing heat resulting in Heatstroke in the northern region of Nalcott Island in The Way of the Winter Scenario, I’ve got you covered with my guide on how to survive cold and heat in Once Human The Way of Winter that breaks down the new Temperature mechanic and the different items to resist them.
As the scenario name suggests, version 1.3, “The Way of the Winter,” takes players to the northern region we have all waited for so long.
However, as a survival game, the arrival of the snowy region in Once Human meant we were bound to get a temperature-based survival mechanic.
Well! We did get one, which becomes more hardcore as the Season Phase progresses!
In The Way of the Winter, you will be dropped into the northern region right after you complete the game’s tutorial.
Oh! By the way, you will get the option to choose your spawn area.

After you land, you will first notice a small temperature meter below your mini-map, which also appears in the Inventory section.
It plays a vital role in surviving heat and cold in Once Human The Way of Winter Scenario.
So keep reading my guide as I share some beginner’s tips and break down the different temperature-based mechanics.
Once Human The Way of Winter Temperature mechanic effects and status explained

The Way of the Winter Scenario in Once Human features five different types of temperature status, each with their effects.
These are:
- Frost
- Chilly
- Cozy
- Heat
- Blaze
Note
Temperature ranges for each status depend on your body weight. So they can differ from the ones mentioned below.

Frost
The Frost status comes into play when the temperature reaches below -50° C, with the following debuff taking effect:
“Quickly loses Energy, and the character’s body temperature drops sharply. It gets inflicted with a stack of Frozen every 3 seconds, losing 5% HP per second, slowed. At four stacks of Frozen, instantly dies.”
Chilly
The Chilly status comes into play when the temperature reaches between -50° C to -20° C.
“Quickly loses Energy, and the character’s body temperature drops slowly.”
Cozy
The Cozy status is what you have to maintain in order to survive in The Way of the Winter Scenario.
You have the Cozy status when the temperature is between 20° C to 30° C. When the status is active, “The character’s body temperature slowly recovers to normal.”
Heat
As I mentioned earlier, the northern region of Nalcott is full of volcanoes and snowy tundra.
When you explore the hot areas and come close to heat-inflicting resources or enemies, you will get the Heat status when the temperature is between 30° C and 60° C.
Once it is in play, the following effect takes place, “Quickly loses Hydration, and the character’s body temperature rises slowly.
Blaze
The Blaze status is effective when the temperature is above 60° C.
The following debuff takes effect when that happens:
“Quickly loses Hydration, and the character’s body temperature rises sharply. Gets inflicted with a stack of Combustion every three seconds. (Loosing 5% HP per second, Gear Durability reduced by 1%.) At four stacks of Combustion, instantly dies.”
Now that you know everything about the different temperature-based statuses. Let us talk about how to counter them.
How to survive Cold temperature in Once Human The Way of Winter

There are multiple ways to survive Cold in Once Human The Way of the Winter. You can:
- Place down your CAMP to ensure the Hypothermia is not severe so the cold temperature doesn’t kill you.
- Using Temperature Control building items at your base
- Using a Torch
- Consuming Cold Resist food items or raw ingredients
- Using the new Leatherworking Memetic to craft armor with Cold Resist
- Unlocking Polar Expedition Memetic for crafting and using the Heatium or Thermoium items
Here is a more detailed explanation of surviving Cold Mechanic in Once Human.
Hey
This guide is too dull without any screenshots. I will add them and more information once The Way of the Winter Scenario is live. [I wrote this guide on October 16, 2024.]
Also, if the guide helped, please consider buying a coffee. Or, sharing the guide and leaving a comment will also do.
Temperature Control Memetics
You can find a brand new Temperature Control Memetic Tree in the Building tab of the Memetics screen.
Unlock the different Temperature Control Memetics and use structures like ‘Campfire’ via the ‘Function Facility’ tab to survive Cold.
Placing a single Campfire increases the temperature by a certain degree based on the material used as fuel. [Effective range is 5m]
Crafting and using a Torch
Crafting a Torch and holding it increases the temperature by +5° C.
Consuming Cold Resist food items or raw ingredients
There are many new temperature-control food items and cooking-related Memetics that you can unlock and use to increase your cold resistance.
Here are a few raw ingredients that can be found in the open world and be consumed to increase cold resistance:
- Sunny Ginger: Increases your Cold Resist by 5.
- Spikemato: Increases your Cold Resist by 5.
- Polar Pepper: Increases your Cold Resist by 5.
Leatherworking Memetic
The Way of the Winter has added a new layer to armor crafting in Once Human.
You can unlock the ‘Leatherworking’ Memetic from the ‘Crafting’ section of the Memetic screen.
Head to Gear Workbench and start using different hides to get Cold Resist in your armor.
However, remember that cold and heat resist buffs apply only to jackets and pants-type armors.
Polar Expedition Memetic
You can find and unlock the Polar Expedition Memetic from the ‘Infrastructure’ section of the Memetics screen.
Once it is unlocked, you can head to a Supplies Workbench and craft the Thermoium or the Heatium to survive the cold.
How to survive Hot temperature in Once Human The Way of Winter
Similar to surviving cold, you can use the following methods to survive hot temperatures in Once Human:
- Place your CAMP to ensure the Heatstroke is not severe and doesn’t kill you
- Using Temperature Control building items at your base
- Consuming Heat Resist food items or raw ingredients
- Like Mint, which increases your Heat Resistance by +5.
- Another example is Ice Melon, which also increases your Heat Resistance by +5.
- Using the new Leatherworking Memetic to craft armor with Heat Resist
- Unlocking Polar Expedition Memetic for crafting and using the Coldium or Thermoium items
