Whether you are looking to get your first fishing rod and bait to start fishing or want to know how to trigger and complete the Fishing quest in Fallout 76, I’m here to help you out with my Casting Off quest walkthrough guide.
For players who don’t know, Casting Off is the introductory quest in Fallout 76 that introduces the new Fishing activity to players.
But just like the Milepost Zero introductory quest, A Bump in the Road, or the Ghoulification update quest, Leap of Faith, there are details on how to trigger these quests.
And while the regular players know how to start and complete these introductory quests like Casting Off, many new and returning players face problems.
In the wake of that, and the fact that I simply wanted to talk about Fishing in Fallout 76, I created this walkthrough, talking about how you can get and complete the Casting Off quest to unlock Fishing.
How to start the Casting Off quest in Fallout 76
You can start the Casting Off quest by reading an advertisement message near Vault 76 or by simply heading to The Mire region.
However, to do the quest as it was intended, I will show the advertisement location and how you can use it to start the quest.
So, first of all, teleport to Vault 76.
Once you spawn, follow the stairs on the left side.
As you go down, look at the barrel left of the Ammunition Box.
You will notice a piece of paper saying, ‘Anglers Needed’ stuck with a harpoon on the barrel.
Read the advertisement to trigger the Casting Off quest and your first objective in it.
Once the quest triggers, you can check it in the Data -> Side section of the Pip Boy.

Fallout 76 Casting Off quest walkthrough
The Casting Off quest in Fallout 76 consists of nine main objectives. These are:
- Investigate Fisherman’s Rest
- Speak to the mysterious figure
- Speak to the other stranger
- Pick up fishing equipment from The Fisherman
- Catch fish (0/3)
- Return to Captain Raymond
- Turn the Fish into Fish Bits at a cooking station (0/3)
- Feed the Fish Bits to Linda-Lee
- Report to Captain Raymond
The objectives are easy to complete and are close to one another.
However, for the sake of the walkthrough and for new and returning players who might need some extra handholding, I’ve detailed how to complete each section below.
Investigate Fisherman’s Rest
The Fisherman’s Rest POI is located in The Mire region.
Open your map and teleport to the marked location.
Once you arrive, you must follow the straight path leading to the settlement.
Speak to the mysterious figure
Once you arrive at Fisherman’s Rest, you must talk to the humanoid fish creature at the counter.
Interact with The Fisherman.
Select any dialogue option to progress the quest.
I recommend the selection, “Now there’s a face only a mother could love” 😂.
Speak to the other stranger
Next, you will be tasked to talk to the human NPC named Captain Raymond Clark right of The Fisherman.
Talk to him and select the dialogue option, “That fish thing pointed me to you.”
After that, you will get a single dialogue choice, “I’ve got some questions for you.”
Select it.
Once you do that, you will get four dialogue choices.
You can select the first three to learn more about the Fisherman, their job advertisement, and Captain Raymond.
To progress, you must choose, “That’s all I have to ask right now.”
After you do that, select “Sure, I’ll bring you some fish” to move to the next segment of the quest.
Pick up fishing equipment from The Fisherman
In this section, you must talk to The Fisherman again.
Select the dialogue, “Your friend said you have something for me.”
Doing so, you will get the Fishing Rod and 10x Common Bait.
You will also get introduced to the Fishing system.
Catch fish (0/3)
In this section, you must catch three Fish (any type) at any water body and turn them in to Captain Raymond.
I recommend fishing near the dock to quickly get done with this section.
Head near the water body, and you will find the ‘Fish’ option added to the action menu.
Hold the respective button, which on PC is the ‘R’ key, to start fishing.
Fishing in Fallout 76 is very simple.
All you have to do is select the bait that you want to use and then cast the line.
You don’t have to manually place the bait or do any such thing.
You can use the ‘A’ and ‘D’ keys to cycle between Baits and then press the ‘E’ key to cast the line.
After you cast the line, wait until the hook changes its location.
As soon as that happens, press the ‘E’ key to Reel In.
Doing so will start a sort of mini-game where you must use the Mouse / Directional Analog Stick to keep the cone-shaped area on the fish icon.
If you do it correctly, you will catch the fish.
Repeat the process two more times.
Once you have caught three fish, the quest will progress.
Return to Captain Raymond
Return to Captain Raymond and talk to him.
Select the dialogue option, “Yes, here they are.”
Turn the Fish into Fish Bits at a cooking station (0/3)
While you can make the Fish Bits at any cooking station, you will find one at the Fisherman’s Rest.
Head to the camping area left of The Fisherman NPC.
You will find a cooking pot at the middle.
Interact with it and select the ‘Fish Bits’ option.
Select and make the three Fish Bits using the Fish you captured.
Feed the Fish Bits to Linda-Lee
Now, near the cooking pot, you will find the giant Hermit Crab by the name Linda-Lee.
Go near her and interact with the feeding container in front of her.
Submit the three Fish Bits to get a Legendary equipment and some random rewards.
Report to Captain Raymond
Lastly, head back to Captain Raymond and talk to him.
Select the dialogue option, “She gave me a gift!”
Doing so, Captain Raymond will introduce you to the newly added Fishing Rewards system.
Close the window, and that will end the Casting Off quest.
Fallout 76 Casting Off quest rewards
Completing the Casting Off quest in Fallout 76 unlocks the Fishing activity while giving you access to the Fishing Rod and Common Bait.
You also get a random Legendary when you feed Linda.
And upon completing the quest, you get the following items as rewards:
- (10) Bait – Common
- (5) Bait – Improved
- Recipe: Grilled Fish
