Whether you are unable to find clues about who stole the painting of the Count or are struggling with interrogation, my Oblivion Remastered Canvas the Castle quest walkthrough covers all the steps in full detail.

Canvas the Castle is a side quest set in the Chorrol Castle where players investigate the case of a stolen painting of the Countess’s late husband, Charrus Valga.

One of the NPCs involved in this quest trains the Destruction skill, making completing the quest more rewarding.

That said, since there are two different endings you can get in the quest that leads to different rewards and little to no details on how to progress and complete it, many players get stuck.

In the wake of that, I prepared this detailed guide talking about all endings and how you can get and complete Canvas the Castle side quest in Oblivion Remastered.

How to start Canvas the Castle quest in Oblivion Remastered

To start Canvas the Castle side quest in Oblivion Remastered, you must first teleport to Castle Chorrol.

Once you spawn, take a sharp left.

You will find a door leading to the Castle Chorool Great Hall.

Interact with it and head inside.

Make sure the in-game time is between 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

If not, pass the time as that is when the Countess sits on her throne.

Once the Countess is there, talk to her and select the Investigation option.

At first, she will not tell you anything. So, go back and use the Persuade option and get the Disposition to 70 or more.

Once done, talk to the Countess and select the Investigation option, once again.

This time she will tell you about the stolen painting.

Select the dialogue option, “Yes, I’d be glad to help.”

Once you do, Canvas the Castle quest will become active.

Canvas the Castle side quest complete walkthrough

Assuming you have followed the guide so far and triggered the Canvas the Castle quest, here are the steps you must do to complete the quest:

  1. Speak to the witnesses and suspects to gather clues
    • Bittneld the Curse-Bringer, the Captain of the Guard, will either be patrolling Chorrol or in the castle barracks
    • Chanel, the court mage, is under curfew in the private quarters of the castle
    • Laythe Wavrick, the herald, can either be found in the great hall by the throne, or in the private quarters
    • Orgnolf Hairy-Legs, the castle porter, is also under curfew in the private quarters
    • Orok gro-Ghoth, the steward, can also be found in the private quarters or at Northern Goods and Trade
  2. After the interviews, find evidence
    • Painting equipment
    • Footprints
    • Unusual Painting
  3. Confront and accuse the culprit
  4. Return to the Countess and either turn the culprit in or absolve them

To make things easier for you, I have explained how you can complete each section below:

Speak to the witnesses and suspects to gather clues

In this part of the quest, you must talk to five NPCs and gather clues about the painting, suspects, etc.

Laythe Wavrick

The first person you should talk to is Laythe as you can find him near the Countess.

Talk to him and use the Gather Clues option to progress the quest.

Once done, the quest will progress with the objective being questioning more suspects.

Orok gro-Ghoth

Next, use the stairs left or right of the throne to reach the first floor and head to the Private Quarters.

Once inside, follow the path on the right to reach Orok gro-Ghoth’s room.

Talk to him and use the Persuade option.

Get his Disposition to 70 or more.

After that, select the Gather Clues option.

Gorok will tell you his part of the story, progressing the quest.

Chanel

Next is Chanel, whom you can find on the leftmost part of the Private Quarters, inside her room.

Talk to her and select the Gather Clues option to learn her side of the story.

Orgnolf Hairy-Legs

Now, head back to the main hall area and you will find Orgnolf.

If he is not there, you can find him inside his room in the Private Quarters or at Northern Goods and Trade.

Talk to Orgnolf and use the Persuade option.

Once again, get Disposition to 70 or more.

After that, use the Gather Clues option.

Bittneld the Curse-Bringer

The last person you must talk to is the Guard Captain, Bittneld.

You can find him near the Countess by the time you are done talking to all other NPCs.

If he is not there, you can find him in the Castle Barracks area or patrolling Chorrol.

Talk to Bittneld and select Gather Clues.

After you are done talking to all the suspects, you will finally progress this part of the quest and move to collecting evidence.

Find evidence

There are three pieces of evidence that you need to find the culprit.

Footprints

The first evidence is the footprint found in the Dining Hall found the right side of the throne room.

Follow the path and you will find yourself in the Dining Room.

Go near the Paint Stained Carpet and interact with it.

You will find the paint stains and paint footprints on it.

Painting equipment

Now, use the stairs left of the throne to quickly reach Chanel’s room.

Inside, you will find a Lectern. Interact with it.

Inside the Lectern, you will find painting equipment.

You will learn that Chanel is trying to hide painting supplies in the Lectern.

Unusual Painting

Now, exit Chanel’s room, stick to the left wall, and follow the path. It will lead you to the Chorrol West Tower door.

Head inside and look behind the boxes to find the Trap Door to Castle Chorool West Tower.

Head inside the trap door and look behind the wooden boxes to find Unusual Painting.

Interact with it to get the final piece of evidence.

It seems Chanel is the culprit who stole the painting.

    Confront and accuse the culprit

Head back to Chanel’s room, talk to her and choose the Accuse option.

Select the dialogue option, “Yes, I accuse you of the crime.”

She will tell you that you have strong evidence but she doesn’t trust you enough to share her motivation.

Well! Throw her some money to move the Disposition to 70 or more.

Accuse her again and she will tell you that she did the crime and the story behind it.

Doing so will progress the quest.

Return to the Countess and either turn the culprit in or absolve them

The last objective in the quest gives you two options once you talk to the Countess:

    1. Use “I accused Chanel”
      • If you accuse Chanel, you will complete the quest and will get Gold based on your level and other factors along with +Fame. But the countess will also kick Chanel.
      • And that is why I don’t recommend this option as Chanel has a better reward for you and she can also train your Destruction level.
    2. Lie: Neither suspect.
      • You get your portrait after three weeks from Chanel as a reward.
      • You get less Gold.

I recommend selecting the second option. Once you do that, head back to Chanel’s room and talk to her.

She will thank you and tell you to return after three weeks.

Pass three weeks and you will get a pop-up saying you should pick up your painting from Chanel.

Head back and talk to her and you will get your painting and the quest will complete.
