Whether you want to investigate where Pint-Sized Phantoms were spotted in Appalachia in Fallout 76 or learn how to complete the Out of Shadows quest, I’ve got you covered with this walkthrough.
Out of Shadows is the third quest in The Slasher questline, with the other two being Masked Truth and Secrets to the Grave.
In this quest, players investigate two areas where the Pint-Sized Phantoms were spotted to learn their motive.
The quest is pretty straightforward, but still some players can get stuck. So I prepared this full walkthrough.
The Slasher Out of the Shadows quest walkthrough
To start the quest, make sure you have completed the previous two quests: Masked Truth and Secrets to the Grave. If not, I have already linked the walkthroughs for those two quests above. Check them out.
That said, here’s an overview of the quest:
- Investigate the areas where the Pint-Sized Phantoms were spotted (0/2)
- Read ‘Phantoms’ Orders: ‘His Vessel’
- Investigate Organ Cave
- Search the Pint-Sized Phantom Tinkerer
- Listen to The Summoning holotape
The two locations where the Pint-Sized Phantoms were spotted are:
- Gauley Mine
- RobCo Research Center
Gauley Mine
Teleport to Gauley Mine POI.
Once you spawn, head inside the mine.
Follow the main path.
Once you arrive in the central mining area with the scaffolding, go through the stairs leading to the main cave as marked in the screenshot above.
There you will find a Steamer Trunk with the Phantoms’ Order item. Collect it to progress the quest.

RobCo Research Center
Now, teleport to RobCo Research Center.
Head through the main door.
From the reception area, take the path on the left side towards the Research Wing.
Head to the main area and defeat the robots and turrets.
Make your way inside the room with the Trunk. [Just follow the quest marker.]
Collect the Phantoms’ Orders.
Read ‘Phantoms’ Orders: ‘His Vessel’
Open your Pip-Boy and read the Phantoms’ Orders: ‘His Vessel.’
At the end of the note, you will find the next hint, “Join us at the bottom of the Organ Cave.”
Investigate Organ Cave
Make your way to Organ Cave.
Once you arrive, head inside and follow the path leading to the bottom part of the cave.
Search the Pint-Sized Phantom Tinkerer
Once there, you will find many enemies. To progress the quest, defeat the Legendary enemy called Pint-Sized Phantom Tinkerer.
After that, collect The Summoning Holotape along with other notes and items from the body.
Listen to The Summoning holotape
Open your Pip-Boy and listen to The Summoning holotape from the New tab.
As soon as you do that, the quest will complete.
The rewards for completing Out of the Shadows quest are:
- Plan: Pint-Sized Slasher Photo Frame
- Treated Pocketed Chest Piece.
