As you explore the area near Shu Sanctum, you will eventually arrive at a village where you talk to a girl who gives you the Courtyard Key and asks you to check on her family.
It is a sort of side quest that leads you to the Militia Armor Set in the game, along with a few other items and more lore.
While most players can stumble upon the Courtyard Key, they fail to find the locked door where they can use it.

How to get the Courtyard Key in Wuchang Fallen Feathers
You can get the Courtyard Key from a girl NPC found in the Bamboo Village area near the Shu Sanctum.
From the Shu Sanctum’s stairs that you see in the above screenshot, take the ladder on the left.
Once you are on the roof, take the ladder on the right side.
Go through the wooden bridge.
Once you reach the other side, take the two ladders on the right side to reach the ground level.
The village I talked about is located towards the marked path.
Follow the main path the right once you are on ground.
Take the first left and you will reach the village.
Stay on the main path.
Take the first right.
The last house on the left side is where you will find the NPC who gives you the Courtyard Key.
To obtain it, exhaust her dialogues.

Where to find the Courtyard in Wuchang Fallen Feathers
From the NPC house from whom you got the Courtyard Key, exit the village area.
[From the house, taking the first left and then right.]
Once you are at the exit, take the path on the left side as marked in the above screenshot.
From the Buddha statue, take a right.
Go through the stairs.
At the end of the stairs, turn left and then right, as marked in the above screenshot.
As you enter the courtyard area, be aware of enemies.
There are many on the roof, the balcony, and on the ground.
The locked door is on the left side.
Use the Courtyard Key to open the door.
Take the first left and use the stairs to reach the first floor.
Stick to the path on the right side.
You will find a dead body.
On it, you will find the Militia Armor Set.
After taking it, go to the room in front of you and take a left.
Interact with the document on the table to get Damaged Letter that you can give to the girl to progress and complete her quest.
Head back to the girl and give her the Damaged Letter.
She will learn about the fate of her family and move to the Reverent Temple.
